It is seriously cold in Boston today - 32 degrees! I'm not ready for the winter just yet. I want to hold onto Fall for a few more weeks. Give me all the apple cider, crunchy orange leaves, and pumpkins everywhere. One way to achieve that goal is to hold onto reviews for books I read in October, right?? That's my excuse for this incredibly late post anyway.

My final thriller in October was The Wife Between Us. If you read my review on The Anonymous Girl, you know this book has been in my TBR stack for a long, long time. In fact, it was my Book of the Month* pick way back in December 2017. If I had known what I was missing out on, I would not have waited this long!

Well Read Rating: 4/5

Sometimes thrillers can seem a little predictable. The first 2/3 of the book lays the groundwork and introduces you to the characters. Everything seems great, and then... PLOT TWIST! She's a murderer! He's a crazy ex-lover! She isn't who you thought!! Honestly after a month of reading thrillers, I thought I knew what I was going to get with A Wife Between Us. I was wrong.

SPOILER WARNING:

As I was making my way through the first half of the book, I was honestly a little bored. I have read too many books that tell the story of two women, different timelines, two perspectives, some overlap, alternating chapters. You know the drill. Especially with two authors, it seems like a pretty predictable literary tool. So I swear I gasped out loud and started laughing like a crazy person when I realized that the apparently dueling perspectives in the first half of A Wife Between Us were actually the same person talking. As the kids would say, I was shook. From that point forward, I found myself second guessing everything in the book, which made it a much more thrilling read.

Were the characters relatable? Maybe not. Vanessa is too needy, too broken. Richard is too... rich? Controlling? I don't know anyone in my real life I could compare him to. The writing is good, not great. It's not the type of book where I'm underlining passages to read again. BUT, it was fun. And sometimes, that's all you need.

This book kept me guessing until the very end. I did not see it coming. I didn't even know what to think was coming. It was a twisty, fun ride (that is apparently being made into a movie!) I hope Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen bring us another winner soon!!

L.S.
